Facebook Page Access

Let’s cut straight to the point—if you’re using a dedicated password to log into your Facebook Page something is not right.

The first (and most important) thing to know is the difference between a Facebook Profile and a Facebook Page.

Facebook Profile

  1. Used for real human individuals (you, your mom, your friends, etc.)
  2. This Profile requires a password to log in and you are the only person who has access to this account.

Facebook Page

  1. Used for businesses, organizations, public figures, etc.
  2. This Page has tools and functionality suited for businesses and is accessed via Admin status, often with multiple Admins

Admin status, what’s that?

Without going too far into the nitty-gritty of how Facebook is structured for businesses (you can read up on that here), these are the basics:

  • Facebook will always require a Page to be set up from an authentic personal Profile.
  • In turn, the personal Profile that sets up the Page will automatically be granted Admin status—the keys to the (Facebook Page) kingdom.
  • For example, Sarah Smith logged into her Facebook Profile and set up her company’s Page, ‘Dog Grooming By Sarah’, now Sarah is the Page Admin and has full control over the ‘Dog Grooming By Sarah’ Page.

With us so far?

  • Sarah Smith can only ‘log into’ her company’s Page by logging into her personal Profile; therefore, no dedicated Page password is ever needed.

So, what now?

You might have a few (or more than a few) follow-up questions on how to get your Page access sorted—and that’s to be expected.

Things can get complicated when employees leave the business, or when a third-party was tasked with set-up but never granted you access properly, or when you actually have no idea who set up the Facebook Page, to begin with.

Here are some of the most common FAQs that we are asked, and are great resources to start troubleshooting. If you need assistance or a seasoned social professional to point you in the right direction (we’ve seen it all) don’t hesitate to contact GMD.

How do I see what my role is on a Facebook Page? (Hint: If you can’t see the options listed here when you navigate to the Page, you are not an Admin.)
