Our Favourite Podcasts

If you’re on the lookout for a new podcast, Team GMD has your back. Check out these recommendations.

Michael – Ologies with Alie Ward – Take away a pocket full of science knowledge and charming, bizarre stories about what fuels these professional -ologists’ obsessions. Humourist and science correspondent Alie Ward asks smart people stupid questions and the answers might change your life. – Spotify Summary
What I like – There is an episode on almost anything you can think of from Fearology (study of fear) to Dendrology (study of trees) to Mixology (study of cocktails). As someone enamoured with nature, I’ve handpicked episodes about foraging, bears, insects, trees, deer and a whole lot of other stuff. There are no cheesy ads, the host is funny and easy to listen to, as are most of her guests.

Mamio – Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine
If you like biology and medical related topics, I recommend listening to Justin and Dr. Sydnee McElroy on a marital tour of misguided medicine as they discuss the weird, gross, and sometimes downright dangerous ways we tried to solve our medical woes through the ages.

Ian – Song Exploder – It’s “a podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made.” Host Hrishikesh Hirway gets artists to dissect the writing, production and history of one of their songs. While hearing isolated individual tracks and an in-depth discussion of technical choices, the listener gets a chance to appreciate how specific decisions led to the final product. It’s even a show on Netflix now too! — Favourite episodes: Andrew Bird – Roma Fade | The Roots (Feat. Bilal) – It Ain’t Fair | Big Thief – Cattails

Sam – Science Vs – These excellent fact checkers take on a range of curious topics like Lab-Grown Meats, Peanuts, Fasting Diets, Aliens and these days especially, COVID. They take on a scientific approach so they always display their sources (usually totally about 100 per episode) in their show notes. There are so many fads and trends but how well do they meet the facts?

Adriano – 99% Invisible
Roman Mars invites experts to discuss curious facts about design and architecture. What makes this podcast so unique to me is that it usually brings up behind-the-scenes reasons that creators take into consideration when designing life-changing products. Even though it is particularly awesome for designers and architects, it is very interesting for all kinds of audiences.
